Hey, World.
What makes me laugh? Saturday Night Live skits. Everything from Eddie Murphy , John Belushi, and Chris Farley to, Alex Baldwin, Kate McKinnon, and Will Ferrell. It was not only the off-the-wall content that they created but everybody seemed to have so much fun working together. The red years were a hard time for everybody, and as the old saying goes ” laughter is the best medicine” really does hold a lot of water. Lighthearted political skits where a good way to let off some steam and bring people together. I always appreciated the fact that Saturday Night Live did not shy away from any topic including gun violence, LGBTQ, Racism and others that matter. Many occasions I would watch them with my wife, and we would recount our favorite scene or line of a skit for weeks, months, years, even decades later. Remember Waynes World, or The Church Lady? Those are from the 90s, and were only a couple pulled out of a gigantic treasure trove of laughter that will last for years to come.

For me, it wasn’t what I wanted to be, but who. I wanted to BE Evel Knievel. We watched him on a Saturday National TV episode one afternoon where he jumped a ridiculously long row of cars with his motorcycle, the cameras panning in on every angle of his death- defying flight, the crowd on its feet, all chanting his name. Hell, he even gave everyone a thumbs up mid-flight, and I almost peed my pants. I couldn’t breathe and my heart pounded so hard I thought it was going to burst until he landed safely. In his interview afterward he acted so cool and everyone loved him. That sparked a fire inside my tiny little body and brought out Daredevil in me. The first chance I got I cleared off the top of my short wide dresser, somehow maneuvered my big wheels three-wheel bike on top of it all by myself and proceeded to drive it off in the direction of my bed. Needless to say, any dreams my parents may have had of sending their firstborn child off to an Ivy League school crashed and burned that day. This story was told to me many times over the years by my mother but the impression that Evel Kinevel had on me would last a lifetime.

Are you the type of person that gets nostalgic about their childhood memories? My entire life I have been sharing them with my family all of my truly unbelievably cool stories as they are a part of me. Kids today will not be able to relate to many of them but will undoubtedly enjoy reading them out of morbid curiosity much like watching a high-speed chase. To the best of my knowledge every story down to the detail will be true, and a real insight as to what it was like to grow up in the mid-70s on up. Without further ado, welcome to Memory Lane.
